- Light source and lamp
- It's a dichroic color head with dial-in yellow, magenta and cyan and a white-light lever for focusing. The lamp is LPL's 100 W 12 V quartz-halogen reflector, and KHB Photografix still sells it. Ask for a photo of the head lit, and check the three small panel bulbs that light the filter scales.
- Carriers and condensers
- It takes LPL's hinged glassless carriers in 35mm, 6x4.5, 6x6 and 6x7, plus a universal glass masking carrier with inserts down to 110. One light mixing box inside the head covers every format up to 6x7. Ask which carriers are included and whether the mixing box is still in the head.
- Column and bellows
- The carriage rides an XL aluminum girder on a constant-force spring, with lift-and-lock elevation and focus knobs on both sides. The bellows are extra long, and KHB sells replacements for ones that have cracked, split or gone pinholed. Ask for a photo of the bellows racked out with a light inside.
- Alignment
- The lens stage tilts and shifts for correcting converging lines, so it has to be locked back at zero for normal printing. Ctein found his within 1/8 degree, and still in line after relocking the stage. On arrival, check it with a mirror or laser alignment tool.
- Lens
- A reversible 39 mm threaded lensboard is standard and takes most 50 mm and 80 mm enlarging lenses with no retaining ring. KHB's refurbished units ship without a lens or carriers, so a lens is the seller's extra. Check the listing says which lens, if any, is on the board.
- Timer and power
- The color head won't light without its separate power supply box, a 3.1 kg unit for 120 V or 220 V. Ctein noted the supply isn't stabilized, so careful color printers add a voltage stabilizer. Plan on your own enlarging timer, since none is part of the package.
- Shipping and pickup
- The enlarger weighs about 16 kg and KHB ships it in two cartons, with the baseboard separate. The column bracket comes off the baseboard with four Allen screws, so it breaks down for shipping. Ask the seller to pack the head and power supply apart from the column.
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
