- Light source and lamp
- VCCE stands for Variable Contrast, Constant Exposure. The module dials contrast from grade 00 to 5 without changing exposure, with a switch for Kodak or Ilford-type papers and a white-light switch. The lamp is a 200 W 82 V quartz-halogen, still sold by KHB, and a 24 V version goes with 220 V-market supplies. The dichroic and B&W diffusion modules swap into the same lamphouse.
- Carriers and condensers
- It uses hinged glassless carriers for each format, and KHB says LPL's 4x5 carriers also fit Omega D4, D5 and D6 enlargers, so Omega D carriers work too. The 4x5 mixing box works with every format. Optional 6x7 and 35mm boxes add light for smaller negatives. Ask which carriers and mixing boxes come with it.
- Column and bellows
- The carriage rides a heavy box girder on two 30 mm constant-force springs, with an elevation lock, fine elevation and fine focus on the right knob. The elevation lock knob and the carrier lift lever both have plastic collars that split with heavy use, so the knob or lever turns without doing anything. Ask for a video raising, locking and focusing the head.
- Alignment
- Lens stages on early 4500-IIs, and on the 4500 before it, have no way to adjust the lensboard. Later stages have adjustment screws, and KHB sells that stage as an upgrade. Ask the seller for a photo under the lens stage showing whether adjustment screws are there.
- Lens
- The package includes one 39 mm threaded lensboard and no lens. For 4x5 you'll want a 135 or 150 mm lens, and LPL makes a 50 mm thread board for certain Rodenstock and Schneider lenses of those lengths. Check which boards are included and what lens, if any, is on them.
- Timer and power
- The lamp runs from a 120 V voltage-stabilized power supply. KHB warns that the current supply's round 4-pin plug won't fit the square plug on earlier Saunders/LPL lamphouse cords, so the original supply matters. Plan on your own enlarging timer as well.
- Shipping and pickup
- It weighs about 26 kg and KHB ships it in three cartons, with the head, column and baseboard packed apart. Ask the seller to box them separately, or pick it up if it's close.
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
