LPL's own history dates its first 4x5, the 7450, to 1984. It used the column of the 7700, and its big idea was a modular lamphouse. You bought it with a dichroic color module, a VCCE variable-contrast module or a plain diffusion module for graded paper, and could swap in the others later. KHB Photografix, LPL's Canadian distributor, tells the rest. Labs and schools wanted something sturdier, so the 7451 got a massive box-girder column and heavy-duty carriage. The 7452 then added an extension that moves the lens further from the column for big easels, with a 250W lamp module. The 7452L, with a longer column and baseboard, came last. In the US these were the Saunders/LPL 4500-II and 4550XL, and later the Omega/LPL 4500-II. VCCE stands for variable contrast, constant exposure. You dial in a grade and the exposure stays put, and LPL's Japanese catalog lists separate Kodak and Ilford paper channels on its VCCE modules. Since the modules swap, check which one is actually fitted.

Should come with it
Hard to find if missing
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
KHB's parts lists show what wears: the plastic diffuser panel in the mixing box discolors or breaks, and filter control knobs, held on by a small D-shaped clip, break off. A discolored panel can often be removed and cleaned with mild detergent.
New to used enlargers? How to check a used enlarger covers the bellows, the column, the lamp and alignment, and moving a big enlarger covers freight, pickup and taking the column apart.
Buying guide
There's only one LPL 7451 for sale, jz3_94's at $4,000, so that figure isn't a market read. It's titled ready to use with a lens and negative holders, and the photo shows the head on its box-girder column and baseboard, but the title says diffusion, so ask whether the VCCE, dichroic or plain B&W module is fitted. Ask for the stabilized power supply in a photo and check its plug matches the head, since KHB says the square-plug, round 4-pin and 220V supplies don't cross over. No shipping is quoted, and at about 26 kg on a 60x60 cm baseboard it's a heavy, awkward shipment, so plan to collect it or ask how the column, head and baseboard will be packed. In the US the same machine was sold as the Saunders/LPL 4500-II, which has its own page.
