Omega · Large format · 1982–1997
The D5500 was Omega's high-tech 4x5 of the early 1980s, and KHB Photografix says it used every design advance available when it launched in 1982. The column bolts straight to the baseboard like the C760's, the negative stage sits further forward so the head is square with no overhang, and the head is fixed with no lifting levers, all to hold alignment. Negatives sit in magnetic masks inside C and D size holders that drop into a rotating cassette. The Auto CLS head is a closed-loop dichroic lamphouse run from a table-top controller over a ribbon cable, with electronic filtration, timer functions and even a computer port. Few condenser D5500s were sold, because Omega launched the ProLab II in 1985 with the familiar DV and Super Chromega heads on a chassis still labeled D5500. It's an Omega design from the Berkey years. For all its features, the older D5 outsold it, and the D5500 was dropped in 1997.

Should come with it
Hard to find if missing
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
KHB flags the electronics first, since early controllers with membrane keypads were prone to keyboard failure. The fine elevation drive rollers crack and come off their shaft, leaving the fine knobs turning with no effect.
New to used enlargers? How to check a used enlarger covers the bellows, the column, the lamp and alignment, and moving a big enlarger covers freight, pickup and taking the column apart.
Buying guide
Only 2 D5500s are for sale, and the $1,650 to $3,425 band comes from two asks with no shipping, so it isn't a market read. tom-sky's color D5500 at $793 is the one to ask about; the title says to read the description, and the photo shows the closed-loop dichroic head but no controller. The Auto CLS head does nothing without its CLS controller or translator/controller and ribbon cable, so get a photo of the controller powered up with the head lit before you pay. apogeebee's $4,295 outfit carries an Ilford 500 multigrade head instead, and that's a dealer's price, not a typical used one. Neither quotes shipping, so plan on pickup or ask the seller to box the head, controller and column separately.
