- Light source and lamp
- The stock head is a double condenser lamphouse with two 3½ in condensers and a 75 W PH111A opal lamp, which KHB Photografix still sells new. A small supplementary condenser sits on top when you print 35mm with a 50mm lens. Some B22s carry a Chromega B dichroic head instead, which takes a 75 W 27 V halogen lamp and an external power supply. Ask which head it has and for a photo with the lamp lit.
- Carriers and condensers
- Omega made B22 carriers from Minox and 110 up to 6x6 cm, plus 4x4 and slide carriers. In 1974 the original carriers gave way to spring-hinged rapid shift carriers with black bottoms, shared with the B66, B600 and C700, so you'll see both styles. Look in the photos for the 35mm and 6x6 carriers and the supplementary condenser, since you need all three to print both formats.
- Column and bellows
- The column is an inclined aluminum box extrusion with the counterbalance spring at the top, in standard or XL length. Focus is by an oversize knob on a brass focus rod. Ask whether the head holds its height when the lock is released, and ask for a photo of the bellows with a light inside, since old bellows crack and develop pinholes.
- Alignment
- Omega's Technical Service Manual covers B22 alignment, and the Omega alignment tool is a spirit level on a 15 in bar that you set on the baseboard, negative stage and lens stage in turn. On arrival, check that all three read the same in both directions.
- Lens
- Lenses mount on Omega B lens discs with 39mm, 32.5mm or 25mm holes, held by a lock ring, and a 39mm Leica-thread enlarging lens fits the 39mm disc. Many B22s were sold as kits with a 50mm lens and a 35mm carrier. Check the photos for a lens on its disc if the listing says one is included.
- Timer and power
- The condenser head plugs into any enlarging timer, and there's no timer built in. A Chromega B dichroic head needs its external power supply, and KHB warns that the wrong lamp can damage it. If the listing shows a dichroic head, look for the power supply box in the photos.
- Shipping and pickup
- KHB lists its refurbished B22 kit, with lens and carrier, at about 12.8 kg (28 lb), and the baseboard is 16x20 in. At that weight it's an ordinary parcel. Ask the seller to wrap the condenser lenses and lamp separately from the head.
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
