Leitz sold manual enlargers alongside the Focomats, and Valoy was the name it used for them. A Leitz Valoy was being advertised in 1932, two years before the first Focomat. The Valoy II is the later 35mm version, which James Ollinger's guide places around 1958. Height is set by squeezing a spring-loaded grip for quick moves or turning a knob for small ones, and the lens focuses in a helical mount, so there are no bellows to go bad. One dealer calls them simple, simply wonderful. It was the only Leitz enlarger offered with an anti-Newton condenser, as well as the usual clear one, and late ones came in dark gray. Kienzle in Germany now makes an adapter that swaps the old head for one of its own lighting heads. Look for the anti-Newton condenser and a carrier in the box.

Should come with it
Hard to find if missing
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
Few Valoy II fault reports exist. With helical focusing and no bellows, the condenser glass, the height grip and the lamp are the parts to look at.
New to used enlargers? How to check a used enlarger covers the bellows, the column, the lamp and alignment, and condenser, diffusion and color heads explains which light source suits how you print.
Buying guide
The only Valoy II for sale asks $150 with free shipping from a 99.4% seller, so there's no band to read. The photo shows the lamphouse, its cord and some loose parts with no column or baseboard in view, so ask for photos of the whole enlarger, a full-frame 35mm carrier and the lens before you offer. Ask whether the condenser is clear or the harder-to-find anti-Newton one, and for a photo with the bulb lit, since it has to suit your mains voltage. With helical focus and no bellows, the condenser glass, the height grip and the lamp are the parts that matter.
