The name trips people up. The Focomat Ic Color isn't a dial-in color enlarger. It's the Ic with a drawer built into the lamphouse for color printing filters, which Ed Buziak dates to 1950, when color printing meant Agfa filter packs. Leitz didn't make a color head of its own until the V35. Buziak lists a second Ic Color from 1973 with a plastic laminated baseboard and a 47 inch column, which throws much bigger prints than the short-column Ic. Everything else is the Ic you'd expect, with the condenser resting on the film and a cam keeping the Focotar in focus as the head moves. Today the drawer is handy for multigrade filters, since they sit above the negative and out of the image path. Collectors look for the drawer, the matched Focotar and the illuminated scale working.

Despite the name, there's no dial-in color head. Ed Buziak's history says the Ic Color adds a built-in drawer for Agfa color printing filters, and a dealer who stocks them says Leitz made no color head before the V35. The bulb and condenser are the Ic's, so ask what bulb is fitted and that it matches your mains voltage. Multigrade filters can go in the drawer for black and white.
Carriers and condensers
It takes the Ic's 24x36 film slide, where the condenser presses the film flat, and the single-negative mask with its double glass plate. Dealer listings show a full-frame 35mm carrier as the usual kit. Check the photos for the slide and look for the filter drawer in the lamphouse.
Column and bellows
Like the Ic, the head rides a parallelogram arm and the lens focuses in a helical mount, so there's no bellows. Dealer examples have an illuminated magnification scale on the left of the column. Ask for a video of the head moving and holding, and of the scale lit.
Alignment
The autofocus is the part to confirm. Ask the seller to focus at the top of the range and show the image still sharp at the bottom without refocusing.
Lens
Dealer kits come with the 5 cm Focotar f/4.5, an extension tube and a helical focusing stop that marks the autofocus position. The cam is set for that lens, so ask whether the Focotar is original to the machine.
Timer and power
It's mains powered with a switch on the left of the baseboard, and some have a timer socket on the column. The magnification scale has its own lamp. Check the bulb voltage matches yours and plan on a separate timer.
Shipping and pickup
We couldn't find a weight. The 1973 version's 47 in column makes it a long, awkward box, so ask how the head and arm will be packed or pick it up.
Should come with it
The filter drawer in the lamphouse
The 5 cm Focotar f/4.5 and its helical focusing stop
The 24x36 film slide or full-frame carrier
Illuminated magnification scale, where fitted
Hard to find if missing
The filter drawer, if it's missing (Kienzle makes replacements)
Film slides for 3x4 and 4x4 cm
The NEWOO anti-Newton pressure frame
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
What to check
It shares the Ic's weak points. A swapped lens or a reset cam throws the autofocus off, and the self-clamping height lock can slip with long use. Check the filter drawer is present, since Kienzle in Germany makes replacements for it.
01Filter drawer: Look for the filter drawer in the lamphouse in the photos. It should slide out and back freely.
02Color head: Check whether the original Leitz lamphouse is fitted or an aftermarket color head. Either is fine if it's described clearly.
03Lens: Ask whether the 5 cm Focotar and its focusing stop come with it. The Focotar the cam was set for keeps the autofocus working.
04Autofocus: Ask the seller to focus at the top of the arm, then show the image near the bottom. It should stay sharp without touching the lens.
05Film slide: Check the photos for the 24x36 film slide or mask with its glass. The glass should be clean and uncracked.
06Scale lamp: Ask for a photo of the magnification scale lit. A working scale saves guesswork when you change print size.
07Column: Check the column length in the listing. The 47 in column gives bigger prints but makes a longer, heavier box.
The only Ic Color for sale is a UK one with the 50mm Focotar at $225 delivered from a 99.9% seller, so there's no band to read. Despite the name, it's the Ic with a drawer for color filters in the lamphouse, not a dial-in color head, and today the drawer is handy for multigrade filters. It ships from the UK and the bulb has to match your mains voltage, so ask what's fitted and plan on a different lamp if it's for European mains. Ask for photos of the filter drawer and the film slide, and whether the Focotar is the lens the cam was set for.
