The Focomat IIa is the IIc's grandfather. Leitz's first large Focomat, the Focomat II of 1935, printed negatives up to 6x9 cm. Ed Buziak's history says the IIa followed in 1937 with a redesigned parallelogram arm that narrowed the autofocus range with the 9.5 cm lens to 1.3x to 4.8x. After the war Leitz modified it, and from 1950 to 1956 the IIa carried a 5 cm Elmar and a 9.5 cm Focotar on a rotating holder, so you could switch between 35mm and medium format without unscrewing anything. There was also a IIa Color with a drawer for Agfa color filters. The IIc replaced it in 1956 with a sliding lens changer and new lenses. Kienzle in Germany still lists parts for the IIa alongside the IIc. Collectors want both original lenses and the condenser intact.

Light, carriers, bellows and lens
Light source and lamp
James Ollinger's enlarger guide lists a double condenser head. We couldn't find the lamp Leitz specified for the IIa, though the IIc that replaced it used a 150 W opal lamp. Ask what bulb is fitted and for a photo of it lit. Kienzle in Germany lists IIa and IIc parts, including halogen lamps and a mixing-box conversion.
Carriers and condensers
Kienzle makes a 6x9 cm film stage with metal inserts and slide-in masks for the IIa and IIc, so carriers can be replaced. Ask which carrier and masks come with it and for a photo of the carrier open.
Column and bellows
Ollinger lists bellows focusing, and Ed Buziak says the 1937 IIa got a redesigned parallelogram arm. Ask for a photo of the bellows with a light behind them, and a video of the head moving up and down.
Lens
Buziak says the 1950 to 1956 IIa carried a 5 cm Elmar f/3.5 and a 9.5 cm Focotar f/4.5 on a rotating holder. The autofocus is set up for those lenses, so check both are there and ask whether either has been replaced.
Timer and power
It runs from the mains like the other Focomats, so the bulb has to suit your voltage and you'll want a separate timer. These are 70 to 90 years old, so ask whether the wiring has been checked or replaced.
Shipping and pickup
We couldn't find a weight for the IIa. Ollinger lists the same 20.5x27 in baseboard as the IIc, which weighs about 40 kg, so expect a big, heavy enlarger. Plan on pickup or crated freight.
Should come with it
Both lenses on the rotating holder
A 6x9 cm carrier and masks for smaller formats
Lamphouse with condenser
Hard to find if missing
The original 5 cm Elmar or 9.5 cm Focotar if either is missing
Original Leitz masks (Kienzle makes replacements)
The IIa filter drawer on non-Color versions
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
What to check
We found no IIa-specific fault reports. On every Focomat the autofocus only holds for the lens it was set up for, so a replaced lens means soft prints until the cam is adjusted, and the bellows on a machine this old deserve a close look.
01Model badge: Check the photos for the IIa name on the enlarger. A sliding lens changer means it's a IIc instead.
02Lenses: Check the photos for both lenses on the rotating holder. The Elmar and the Focotar together are the original set.
03Autofocus: Ask the seller to focus at the top of the range, then show the image near the bottom. It should still be sharp without refocusing.
04Bellows: Ask for a photo of the bellows with a light behind them. No pinholes or torn corners is what you want.
05Carrier: Ask which carrier and masks are included and for a photo of the carrier open. A 6x9 cm carrier plus masks covers every format.
06Lamp and wiring: Ask what bulb is fitted and whether the wiring has been checked. A bulb that lights and sound, flexible cords are what you want.
07Pickup: Plan on pickup or crated freight for an enlarger this size. The arm and head should be secured before it moves.
We'd look first at the $339 delivered IIa, the cheaper of the only 2 for sale, titled with a Focotar, a 75mm lens and a negative carrier, and the photo shows it complete on its baseboard. The $525–550 band comes from one ask with no shipping quoted, so it isn't a market read. The 1950–56 IIa's cam is set for a 5 cm Elmar and a 9.5 cm Focotar, so ask which lenses come with it, and since the cheaper title ends in "Parts", ask whether it works and for a photo of the lamp lit. These are 70 to 90 years old, so ask whether the wiring has been checked, and plan on pickup or crated freight for an enlarger this big.
