The M670 had one of the longest runs of any Durst. It arrived in 1983, its factory name was VEGA, which is why its kits are called Vegaset, and it was still in the catalogue in 2006. One chassis took three heads. The Color version has a 100 W halogen lamp and dichroic filters, the BW version a 150 W opal condenser head, and the VC version from 1996 cams its yellow and magenta filters together so exposure stays the same as you change contrast. Durst's last brochure pitched it at the more demanding beginner. Out of the box it prints 35mm, and kits take it to 6x6 and 6x7, with up to 40x50 cm on the baseboard. The head tilts 90 degrees for wall projection. You'll see all three versions, and Durst made it easy to swap heads without tools.

Light source and lamp
The M670 came three ways. The Color head runs a 12 V 100 W halogen lamp (Colamp 100 S) through dichroic filters, rated to 130 in the early manual and 170 in Durst's last brochure. The BW head is a condenser lamphouse with a 150 W opal lamp (Dulamp 150), and the 1996 VC head moves yellow and magenta on cams. Durst stopped amateur spares at the end of 2008, so ask for a spare lamp.
Carriers and condensers
As standard it's set up for 35mm. For color, the Vegacolset 66 and 67 kits add a mixing box, anti-Newton glass and mask for 6x6 or 6x7. For black and white, the Vegaset 67 adds a double condenser, a glassless 6x7 mask and a larger 82 mm filter drawer. Ask which kits are in the sale.
Column and bellows
A crank and toothed rack move the head up a square column with cm and inch scales. Focus is a bellows with friction-drive knobs on each side. Ask for a photo with the bellows racked out and whether focus moves smoothly.
Alignment
The head tilts up to 90 degrees with an angle scale, for wall projection and correcting verticals. Ask the seller to confirm the scale reads zero. A print sharp edge to edge means it's square.
Lens
Lens boards take M39-thread lenses, with a 50mm board standard and a VEGATUB 39 tube to bring a 100mm or 105mm lens down for 6x7. Durst's brochure lists the lens as optional. Check the photos for a lens and the right board or tube for it.
Timer and power
The Color and VC heads run through a TRA 305 transformer or EST 305 voltage stabilizer, then into your timer. The BW head plugs straight into the timer. Make sure the transformer is in the photos if the head is Color or VC.
Shipping and pickup
Durst lists it at about 15 kg with a 46 by 50 cm baseboard, so it can ship as a parcel. Ask the seller to pack the head separately from the column and baseboard, with the lens off.

Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
What to check
Durst's manual says the lamp has to be recentred until dark spots on the baseboard disappear, so an off-center bulb shows as uneven light. Amateur spares stopped at the end of 2008, so missing 6x7 kits and transformers come from other used units.
01Which version: Check the photos and the head label for Color, BW or VC. Ask which head is in the sale.
02Even light: Ask for a photo of the lit baseboard with no negative in. It should be evenly bright with no dark spots.
03Filter dials: On a Color head, ask the seller to turn each dial with the lamp on. The light should change color and the dials should move freely.
04Transformer: Look for the TRA 305 or EST 305 box in the photos if it's a Color or VC head. The halogen head won't light without it.
056x7 kit: Ask whether the Vegacolset or Vegaset kit for 6x6 or 6x7 is included. Without one it only prints 35mm well.
06Bellows: Ask for a photo of the bellows racked out with a light inside. You shouldn't see pinholes or splits.
07Lens and board: Ask whether a lens and the matching board or VEGATUB tube come with it. The board should hold an M39-thread lens.
08Head tilt: Ask the seller to confirm the tilt scale reads zero. A tilted head makes one edge of the print soft.
There's just one M670 for sale, a Color model at $761 delivered or pickup in Tampa, so that price isn't a market read. The photo shows the color head with its filter dials on the column and baseboard. The title mentions only a power cord, and the Color head's halogen lamp runs through a TRA 305 transformer or EST 305 stabilizer, so ask whether that box is in the sale before you pay. Out of the box it prints 35mm, so ask too for a Vegacolset kit if you print 6x6 or 6x7, and for a lens and board, since Durst sold the lens as an option.
