The XL is how Beseler answered printers who wanted bigger prints from a 23C without moving to the floor. Its 1980 brochure put it plainly. To make cropped 16x20 prints on the baseboard, add the extender base and oversize heavy-duty baseboard to any 23C or 23CII, or buy the 23CII XL. The same two parts were sold as the BP Pak, catalog numbers 8118 and 8119. So an XL is a standard 23C head, column, carriers and lensboards sitting higher over a bigger board, and anything that fits a 23C fits it. Camera-wiki lists XL versions of the 23C, the 23CII and the 23CIII, and today's 23C III-XL is the one Beseler still builds. For buyers, the extender base and baseboard are the whole point. A listing that has lost them is just a 23C, and a standard 23C with a BP Pak added does the same job.

Light, carriers, bellows and lens
Light source and lamp
It's the same head as a 23C or 23CII, normally the condenser lamphouse with Beseler's adjustable Cone-of-Light condensers. Early units take the bayonet PH111A 75 W opal lamp and later 23CIIs the PH140 75 W, and KHB Photografix still sells both. Some carry a Dichro 23 dga or Dual Dichro color head, so ask which head and lamp it has.
Carriers and condensers
It takes the standard 23C carriers, from Minox and 110 up to 6x9 cm, and the condensers move for each format rather than being swapped. Check the photos for which carriers are included. A 35mm carrier and one medium-format carrier make a usable start.
Column and bellows
The XL is a 23C or 23CII chassis raised on Beseler's extender base over an oversize heavy-duty baseboard. Beseler sold the same pair separately as the BP Pak to turn a standard 23C into a big-print machine. The crank, counterbalance and both bellows are the same as on a 23CII, and KHB says the original crank handle often breaks. Ask for a photo of where the column meets the base and of both bellows.
Alignment
As on any 23C, the lens stage tilts and the head pivots, so both need to be locked square. Beseler's alignment tool (#8139) mounts in the lens stage with two spirit levels. Ask whether the tilt is at zero and whether the column sits square on the extender base.
Lens
Lenses go on 4x4 in Beseler lensboards, threaded 39mm or drilled. A lens normally isn't included, so check the listing for one and for its board. Beseler pairs 50mm with 35mm and 90mm with 6x7.
Timer and power
With the condenser head it plugs straight into an enlarging timer. A Dichro 23 dga color head needs its separate 24 V transformer, and Beseler says to use only an AC-output stabilizer with it. Ask for the transformer if the listing shows a color head.
Shipping and pickup
With the extender base and oversize baseboard it's bigger and heavier than a standard 23C, though we couldn't find a published weight. KHB lists the condenser assembly alone at 1.75 kg. Local pickup is the safe way to get it. If it ships, make sure the extender base and big baseboard are in the shipment.
Should come with it
Extender base and oversize baseboard (without them it's a standard 23C)
Condenser lamphouse with both condensers
At least one negative carrier
A 4x4 in lensboard
Crank handle
Hard to find if missing
Extender base and oversize baseboard if split from the enlarger
Original crank handle
Dichro 23 dga transformer
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing carrier, condenser or lens board should come off the price.
What to check
It shares the 23CII's wear points, and KHB calls the original crank handle one of the most commonly broken 23CII parts. Beseler's refurbishing kit covers the elevation gears, lock and negative stage cams.
01XL base: Check the photos for the extender base under the column and the oversize baseboard. Both should be there, or it's a standard 23C.
02Model plate: Look for the 23C or 23CII name on the chassis in the photos. A 23CIII-XL is a later machine with a different lock.
03Carriers: Check which negative carriers are included. A 35mm carrier and one medium-format carrier make a usable start.
04Condensers: Ask for a photo inside the lamphouse showing both condensers. Clear glass with no chips is what you want.
05Bellows: Ask for a photo of both bellows with the head racked down. They should be whole, with no tears in the folds.
06Crank and lock: Ask the seller to crank the head to the top and lock it. It should move smoothly and hold its height.
07Lens and board: Check whether a lens and 4x4 in lensboard are included. You can't print without a board.
08Pickup: Plan on local pickup for the big baseboard. If it ships, confirm the extender base and baseboard are in the boxes.
With only 4 for sale, the $500–750 band isn't a market read. We'd look first at the 23CII XL titled tested working for $380 if you can collect it, since it's local pickup only and has no lens. If you want everything at once, the 23CII-XL titled with 2 negative carriers and 2 lenses is $835 delivered, and $235 of that is shipping. The extender base and oversize baseboard are what make it an XL, so check both are in the photos, and if a Dichro 23 color head is fitted, make sure its separate transformer comes too. The $895 one is apogeebee dealer stock titled new, with a dichroic head and a warranty.

The only one titled with carriers and lenses, 2 of each, and the photo shows the condenser head on the long XL column over the big baseboard. It's $835 delivered, above the band because $235 of it is shipping, but you won't be hunting for a carrier or a lens.
